Air Handlers
Arlington TX Air Handler Installation Experts
Air handlers are an essential part of a functioning air conditioner unit, typically contained in a large metal box inside the home. Working parts include:
- A blower or fan, often located in a squirrel cage blower. The blower is driven by a motor that moves air and can operate at a single speed or consist of several preset speeds. The blower or fan can also have a variable drive, allowing a wider range of air flow rates.
- A heating & cooling element used to change the temperature of the air supply in the home or office.
- Filters required to keep your home or business free of dust and particles. This element of the air conditioning system helps to improve indoor air quality.
- A humidifier which makes the air quality more comfortable and reduces static electricity in your environment. This is especially a concern in colder climates, where continuous heat can make air very dry, irritating sinuses.
- A mixing chamber that assures the proper ratio of return, outside, and exhaust air. This is an essential task performed by the air handler as air is exchanged between outdoors and indoors.
- Controls to regulate functionality. Controls for air temperature, humidity, air quality, and flow rate are included, as well as sensors to regulate temperature and humidity. Other control components include actuators, motor controllers, and sail switches.
- Vibration isolators to reduce the noise level in your home. Blowers in the air handler create a great deal of vibration, and isolators are inserted into the ducts just before and after the air handler and, often, between the fan and the rest of the unit.
Air handlers are often located in garages, attics, and closets, unless they are components of a packaged unit. In this case, they may be incorporated into the rest of the HVAC system. The air handler will connect to the ductwork which distributes conditioned air through the space and to a return system that brings air back to the air handler. Sometimes, the air handler will exchange air directly with the space, with no ducts needed. Types of air handlers include:
- Up Flow Air Handlers
- Down Flow Air Handlers
- Horizontal Flow Air Handlers
